Description

The Centre for Assistive Special Technology (CAST), the world’s leading authority on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), define assessment as “the process of gathering information about a learner’s performance to make educational decisions”. The UDL perspective on assessment is that it encourages “assessment by design”, but what does this mean specifically for teachers in further and higher education? How can the UDL principles be used to design effective assessment approaches? What considerations should be made when designing UDL friendly assessments? In this half-day course, Dr Kevin Merry will address those aforementioned questions by unpicking the assessment process, including its purpose, its role in learning, and its role in supporting learners to become expert in their learning. Specifically, Kevin will discuss the key considerations that teachers in further and higher education should make when designing assessments from a UDL perspective, debunking some commonly held myths about UDL assessment practices in the process. This half-day course is a must for anyone with an interest in learning, teaching and assessment in further and higher education.

*Please note, the course will only run with 8 or more participants. If there are fewer than 8 enrolments, a 100% refund will be provided to anyone that has registered.

As part of their engagement with the webinar participants will:

  • Explore the purpose of assessment and how it supports expert learning from a UDL perspective

  • Apply key considerations and design principles for accessible, inclusive and equitable assessment

  • Understand how to make assessment an intentioned part of instruction, encouraging metacognitive development

  • Consider how assessment design can minimise the opportunity and temptation to engage in academic misconduct

Who is the course for?

Colleagues engaged in a wide variety of roles that involve teaching and / or support for student learning, including higher and further education teaching staff, instructional designers, student services colleagues, learning technologists, and those involved in professional learning and development can benefit from this half-day course.
